The Big Misdirection: Counting Calories Vs. Counting Chemicals

For years the standard for gauging dietary compliance has been calorie counting.  We have all been guilty of it.  Frankly, it is pretty difficult not to get suckered into counting calories.  After all, food manufacturers even add up and break them down on every label you pick up.  Yet, here is the irony.  For what appears to be an effort in transparency, the reality of what is in your food is still hidden.  So, if more energy, increased motivation, weight loss, or any other health related change is something you desire, then maybe it’s time to rethink calorie counting.

Natural vs. Non-GMO vs. Organic – The True Meaning Revealed

Natural vs. Non-GMO vs. Organic.  Which one should I buy?  Frequently I am asked some variation of this question.  I am always excited when someone asks me this question.  I get it.  Trying to decipher what these words mean can be difficult.

Let me tell you the real reason I am writing this.  You see, I remember being the sucker at the grocery store looking at labels.  I didn’t know I was getting taken advantage of at the time.  Catchy words like healthy, gluten-free and natural got me more times than I care to admit.  I ate those foods thinking I was getting the best version of those foods available.  Turns out, I was wrong.

Now, you are free to make the same mistake that I did.  However, a better option might be to learn from my mistakes.  To help you avoid going down the same road I did, I am going to tell you what the food industry and their marketing teams hope you never figure out.  Let me show you how they make average food looking amazing with a few misunderstood terms.

Would Your Doctor Put His Money Where His Mouth Is?

Someone recently told me the best investment you can make is in yourself.  Thinking numbers and accumulation, this at first was hard to wrap my head around.  Most people think of investments in terms of the stock market and retirement.  Planning for your future is important.  So important that it should include thoughts beyond money.  Often we focus so much on the mindset of accumulation for later that we forget to live in the moment.

That is when it hit me.  I was not living in the moment.  I was thinking about a distant day to come that frankly might not come.  Without even realizing it, I was not living the best version of me.  I was using my talents, but not in a God-inspired way.  I wanted more, but rather than take the step, I played the game of life with a reserved attitude.  I was too nervous about the consequences of taking a chance that might not work out.

Holy Bread, The Untold Side of Gluten Free Communion

Communion, the taking in of holy bread and wine, is practiced by more people than any other religious act.  In recent years though, the use of holy bread made from wheat has come into question.  Yet, reactions to foods containing wheat continue to become more common.  With a religious tradition this commonly practiced, it was only a matter of time before a church authority figure stepped in.

Wheat has Changed

Gluten free has become one of the most popular dietary patterns.  Most restaurants have some version of gluten free on the menu.  But why the dramatic increase in demand for gluten free foods?  This movement arose out of the observation that gluten is associated with a number of conditions.  Such conditions include autoimmune conditions, cancer and obesity just to name a few.  But the real story is that wheat has changed.

The wheat spoken of in Biblical times is much different than the wheat of today.  Through the years wheat has changed.  Often we hear of genetically modified crops and have a tendency to lump wheat into this category.  The chemicals applied to wheat are also applied to genetically modified crops, likely accounting for the confusion.  Wheat is hybridized, and therefore different than original varieties.
