Is it Time to Divorce Your Food?

Is it Time to Divorce Your Food?

I am going to strike a nerve with you today because I am going to talk about one thing that no one wants to talk about; divorce.  Divorce is unfortunate and often very ugly.  The two sides disagree and there is little if any common ground left.  As ugly as it is, sometimes divorce is necessary.

Now let me be direct, I am in no way an advocate of divorce.  I am very happily married to the most wonderful woman I know.  But divorce is a reality for many, and should be considered by others.  Are you starting to scratch your head and wondering where I am going with this?  If you think the option of divorce is totally off the table for you, let me share something with you that you may not know.  In the great book of Jeremiah in the Bible, the Lord issues a bill of divorce to the people of Israel for not following his commandments.  Yes, even the Lord, whom we should build relationships around, is in favor of divorce.  So acknowledging that, I am going to ask you, is it time you consider a divorce?

What does any of this talk about divorce and the Bible have to do with food?  A lot in fact.  More so than you probably ever knew.  First, think about what divorce is.  On one level it is the emotional separation to something that you were once attracted to or involved with.  This definition should start to give you some insight as to where we are headed.  When the relationship is unhealthy and detrimental, divorce should be on the table.

Average Cost of Health Insurance Making You Mad? Read this!

You and I have something in common.  In fact, we have something in common with all the patients that I see and frankly, most of the country.  By the title of this article, you are not surprised that I am talking about the average cost of health insurance.  As a doctor, it may not seem odd to you that I am bitter towards insurance companies.  Most of us are.  But what might surprise you, is that I have a cash practice.  Now you are probably thinking, “Why do you care about insurance then?”  Since you ask, let me share something with you that is going to really “torque your chain”.  My reason for disliking insurance goes much deeper than my disgust at watching the average cost of health insurance continue to rise like a rocket into space.

The Story Hits Home

Since the first day I began practice, something felt wrong about the insurance system.  I have continually avoided the system in my office for nearly 15 years now.  But the “man behind the curtain” so to say was seen with a recent trip to an emergency clinic and a letter from our insurance provider.  It’s close to 10:30pm on Saturday night, I just landed at the airport and called my wife to let her know I was on the ground.  The person I got on the other end of the line sounded nothing like my wife’s vibrant voice.  Rushing home, I found her incredibly sick.

This was different and she needed emergent care.  Fast forward an hour, her vitals checked, an x-ray taken, 10 minutes with the doctor, and a conciliatory cup of water and my wife is offered several medicines and a “go see your general practitioner” if things don’t get better.

Now, the rest of this story is that about one month later, we get a bill totaling almost $2000 dollars.  A week later, another bill totaling nearly $700 dollars.  And in between, a letter from our insurance provider saying they are raising her rates, on a catastrophic policy that is never used, by over 55%.  Think my story is unique.  It’s not.  I hear it routinely and the average cost of health insurance is projected to keep inflating.

Are You Trapped In a Bad (Food) Relationship?

Have you ever met a person that you just immediately related to?  We all have at some point.  Maybe that person went on to become a good friend or even a mate.  These types of encounters are not the norm.  However, each of us has an increased desire for these types of reactions.  We want to align ourselves with people that are similar to us.  We find harmony with people that we relate to.  In fact, we often go out of our way to seek additional interaction with those that we mesh with.

In contrast, there are those people that we cannot get away from quick enough.  You know the kind I am talking about.  They just annoy you.  You make attempts to avoid interaction and will go out of your way to not have to talk to them.  What you may not know is that this type of relationship and interaction is not limited to people.  In fact, you are having this same type of response every day and not even realizing it with things you encounter.  This lack of realization is leading you down a path of frustration, weight gain, lack of energy and moodiness.
