Before You Detox, Consider a Pre-Tox

Before you plan a detox, consider implementing a Pre-Tox.  What is a pre-tox you ask.  It is the preparation you must do to get the most out of your detox.  Nearly everyone will benefit from doing a detox.  But in my experience, those that pre-tox always get more benefit than those that don’t.

Preparation is Key to Success

I highly recommend that my patients detox.  The best detox programs focus on supporting your body’s own detox systems.  After all, if you could not detox on your own, you could not handle the numerous environmental toxins that you are exposed to daily.  Good detox programs require specific nutrients that make toxin elimination efficient.  Unfortunately, many detox programs focus on using herbs and stimulants that purge the body, without providing true detoxification.  And they are certainly not prepping the body before hand.

It is critical to prep the body for detox.  Not just to get the most out of it.  Also to prevent “detox reactions”.  Detox reactions arise when all detox systems don’t work together optimally.  Think about it like your car.  If just one tire is flat, the car does not move even though nothing else might be wrong with it.

I have literally seen individuals lose up to 14 lbs in 14 days when prepping their body for a detox.

Communion, the taking in of holy bread and wine, is practiced by more people than any other religious act.  In recent years though, the use of holy bread made from wheat has come into question.  Yet, reactions to foods containing wheat continue to become more common.  With a religious tradition this commonly practiced, it was only a matter of time before a church authority figure stepped in.

Wheat has Changed

Gluten free has become one of the most popular dietary patterns.  Most restaurants have some version of gluten free on the menu.  But why the dramatic increase in demand for gluten free foods?  This movement arose out of the observation that gluten is associated with a number of conditions.  Such conditions include autoimmune conditions, cancer and obesity just to name a few.  But the real story is that wheat has changed.

The wheat spoken of in Biblical times is much different than the wheat of today.  Through the years wheat has changed.  Often we hear of genetically modified crops and have a tendency to lump wheat into this category.  The chemicals applied to wheat are also applied to genetically modified crops, likely accounting for the confusion.  Wheat is hybridized, and therefore different than original varieties.

Let’s get real.  Everyone likes something sweet from time to time.  When you get ready to satisfy your sweet tooth, finding an option generally does not pose a challenge.  Sugar is fairly easy to find.  Yet, it is not the only option.  There are a long list of sugar substitutes now.  Some are better than others.  One of the more common is xylitol.

What is Xylitol?

Xylitol, pronounced, “Zi-li-tall”, is a commonly used sugar substitute.  If you have never tried it, you really are missing out.  It is sweet.  But is not a sugar as we often think about sugar.  Comparing xylitol vs. sugar, there are some ironic similarities.  Initially it may seem there are more similarities than differences.  Observing a bowl of sugar and a bowl of xylitol does not highlight any obvious differences.  However, that is where it ends.

There is an autoimmune cause commonly mislabeled as gluten reaction.  Gluten is a cause of autoimmunity.  It can be the culprit of your autoimmunity.  However, there is another piece to the story you have not been told.  Other items can mimic gluten.  Other substances resemble gluten.  This confusions the immune system.  Even when you think you have removed gluten, you have not removed the reaction.  I am sorry to tell you, but if this is you, your autoimmunity is not going to get better.
